Week Two summary
Light, Color and Texture
This week we went over three different topics of light color and texture. All things you find when designing an interior to help add depth, focal points, and feeling to a space.
Let’s start with lighting. There are four different types of light that are important to a given space. There is ambient, task, accent, and mood lighting. Each with a given purpose.
Ambient lighting is the lighting you initially see, its the lighting that illuminates the entire space this lighting can be cooler of warmer depending on the space inside.
Task lighting defines a certain space, lighting that you would find over an island or by a desk.
Accent lighting highlights certain items, this differs from task lighting because it highlights artwork, back of shelves, or even staircases. Where task lighting defines a space itself, accent lighting defines objects, or display items.
Mood lighting tends to be very dramatic, this is where color comes into play, since mood lighting can be warm lights, or colored lights. Mood lighting is used to enhance the intentions for how a space feels. This can be helped with candlelight, lamps, and even different string lights.
Next we talked about color. There are many different elements one can consider when adding color to a designed space.
Color can impact how we feel, it can impact productivity, and can even impact how we feel inside rooms.
Family of colors can be warm cool or neutral, then you have your primary and secondary hues.
Then you have your saturation of color, how bright or how dull a color looks. In regards to this, when looking at colors we can determine three things, the hue value and intensity.
Color can also give off different color-ways when light interacts with it. For example, a color will give off a different hue when being lit by a warm candlelight rather than being lit by a bright white overhead light.
Now onto textures. Textures are tactile, and visual. Textures help with the coziness of a room. They can create intimacy in a room. Textures are something you feel, from soft surfaces to rough ones.
In relation to textures, you have patterns. Patterns help create another visual interest in a space. They can add a repetitive element, and depth to a space.
